Management Performance in a Down Market
posted by Ryan Anderson, April 13, 2008As they say, a good manager really proves his or her value when faced with a down market. Simple concept really, although seldom easy, it is far easier for a profit center manager to show a healthy profit when new and existing customers are literally beating down the door... the question is, what do the same manager's results look like when transactional business is a bit more scarce? If the results are unfavorable, it may be purely market conditions to blame... it may be the individual... sometimes it is a combination of both.
The good news you ask? In the past year or so you have likely had an opportunity to take a good look at how your management team handles adversity, thus identifying possible weak spots on your winning team. You have certainly made a concerted effort to work with your people and help them achieve their goals. That said, if it is determined that the canvas just won't look any better with new paint, well, maybe it's time to consider a fresh canvas....
