Whether hiring a staff professional or senior executive, there are certain steps you can’t afford to skip.  If you ask candidates for these credentials, you can save yourself a lot of time and hassle:

  1. Income verification – collect a recent W2 and two recent paystubs.  This helps to verify current income, as well as employment.  Also, highly motivated candidates will send in this information, so this step doubles as an effective screening tool.
  2. Education verification – collect certified transcripts from all college-level institutions, showing the degree granted.  If you are in a hurry to make a hiring decision, ask the candidate to send over photo copies of the degree(s).
  3. References – collect four to five business references, and two to three personal references.  Our next blog post will discuss the proper questions to ask references.
  4. Criminal background, credit, and drug screening – if this is not part of your hiring process, it should be!

These checks are recommended once you’ve identified a potential hire.  This information will help double check that a candidate is qualified and motivated.
