Follow these four steps to ensure a smoother interview process:

  1. The hiring authority should have two objectives during the interview: first, to verify the candidate’s credentials; and second, to assess the interpersonal qualities of the candidate that fit those valued by your company.  Give yourself the latitude to do both.  Use two interviews if necessary.
  2. The candidate also has two objectives: first, to assess the position; and second, to assess the     culture of your company for his/her own “fit” criteria.  Give the candidate latitude to do both.
  3. Do not talk about money in the first interview.  Establishing your value and allowing the candidate to establish his or hers first, without going into salary specifics, will create a stronger platform for negotiations later in the process.  Getting to the money conversation too quickly will polarize both parties and kill an otherwise good deal.
  4. When you end the interview, be clear about the next steps, and be explicit about what you will do and what you expect the candidate to do.   For example, if the candidate is a fit, ask for references.  If they are not a fit, don’t be afraid to part ways delivering that message.
